Had the chance back in 2020 take on my first Matte Painting lead duties working on "The Tall Grass" episode of Love Death & Robots here at Axis studios.
Working with the ever wonderful Richard Wright & our AD Bram Sells taking on most of the direct painting, I was in charge of planning/scheduling, pipeline, setups and ingesting of all all background painting work on the show. Setup assistance by the fantastic Maeve Eydmann while I was off project for a short while kept the ship steady as ever. Big shout outs to the ENV team, Dmitry Kremiansky especially for the fantastic train modeling.
I don't think any one project has lead me to learn so much - From making a dense custom photoshop plugin to handle all the prep of PSDs to our artists (Colour management, folder organisation per object layer with AOVs all included to say the least), to pipeline management in Houdini for speeding up our internal setup process, to new approaches to re-projecting in Nuke for handling some tricky shots with our limited painting resource time - Ending with pre-comping all shots ready for pickup by our amazing Comp artists.
Super happy I also got to handle a few paintings myself in-between all the technical and lead duties, attempting to match Richards fantastic style as best as I could.
